Burning River Festival – Aug. 15

On Saturday, August 15, help Cleveland celebrate environmental awareness with great music and a frothy pint of Great Lakes Brewing Company beer during the Great Lakes Burning River Festival. Held at the historic Coast Guard Station at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River, this unique festival features educational exhibitors who share a commitment to eco-friendly, sustainable and locally beneficial practices to help raise awareness of environmental issues affecting the region.

Put on by the Great Lakes Brewing Company, the festival features the eco-friendly brewer’s handcrafted beers that are named after local historical figures and events – including Burning River Ale.

This year, the Great Lakes Burning River Festival marks the 40th anniversary of the Cuyahoga River catching on fire and its rise to an EPA paradigm of an environmentally sound river. For more information on this green event, visit http://www.burningriverfest.org/.


June 5 – Aug. 16: Take a break from the water to check out “Andy Warhol Prints: 1974 – 1986," a new exhibit at the Cleveland Institute of Art. In addition to a famed Soup Can print, see works from Warhol's 'Myth Series’ with portraits of the Wicked Witch, Dracula and Santa Claus; and 'Cowboys and Indians', with portraits of General Custer, Teddy Roosevelt, Annie Oakley and John Wayne.


June 13 – 14: Head to downtown Cleveland for the North Coast Harbor Boating & Fishing Fest a boating, fishing and seafood festival on Lake Erie. Enjoy free recreational power and sail boat rides, fishing trips for children, educational entertainment and food.


June 22: Celebrate the re-birth of the Cuyahoga River during the Day of the Year of the River June 22 from 2 – 8pm. Aug. 29: Stop by the West Bank of the Flats on the Cuyahoga River to experience the 2009 Cleveland Dragon Boat Festival. These unique 22-person boats race for approximately 500 meters, taking about 2 – 4 minutes to complete by a team working in unison. The Festival promotes the people and unique cultures of Cleveland's Asian community. No admission fee for spectators.


Sept. 11 – 13: Presented by the Lake County Visitors Bureau, the Lake County PerchFest brings a weekend devoted to Lake Erie’s favorite fish – the perch! Enjoy a mouth-watering fish fry, local live entertainment, "Just For Kids" entertainment featuring a youth fishing tank, a perch fishing tournament, karaoke and more. Nov. 14 – April 11: Visit the Great Lakes Science Center  to experience Water: H2O = Life, a timely, in-depth look at one of the most pressing environmental issues that society faces today. The exhibit illuminates some of the many challenges related to humanity’s sustainable management and use of the life-giving, but finite, resource—water. Great for the whole family.
