It is said that one in every twenty homes in America has a work of Thomas Kinkade hanging on its walls. On Friday, the man who was known to the public as the "Painter of Light," died in his Los Gatos, CA home, of what appeared to be natural causes. He was 54. Kinkade was a favorite among art collectors. Locally, he visited Mentor, OH for events at Gallery One whose authorized Kinkade Signature Gallery on Route 615 attracts visitors from throughout the country. Kinkade leaves his wife, Nanette, and four daughters...and a stricken body of collectors. In his own words, "I try to create paintings that are a window for the imagination. If people look at my work and are reminded of the way things once were or perhaps the way they could be, then I've done my job." He wanted to offer people a cozy, idealized view of the world. Many times the works had a biblical theme. This offered his collectors further comfort and support at times of stress or sorrow. He was not ashamed to put his beliefs into his art. While this endeared him to his fans, many art critics thought his work too saccharine. "Thom's artistic influence went far beyond his cottages and Disney images." said Alan Brown, Gallery One president. "He developed a system for printing on canvas back in 1984...and followed that with highlighting canvas prints in oil. Both of these concepts were revolutionary at the time. His popularity made appreciators of millions of people world-wide who purchased their first works of art from his collections." In celebration of his contributions to fine art, Gallery One has launched a special Thomas Kinkade tribute complete with art, memorabilia and films. The exhibition will continue through September 1. Gallery One is located at 7003 Center Street (Route 615) between Routes. 90 and 2. The gallery is open Monday thru Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call 440.255.1200 or 800.621.1141 or visit www.galleryone.com.
